From the mouths of delegates…

Putting radio advertising under the spotlight, inspiring delegates to look at it differently and re-igniting a passion for it as the powerful advertising medium that it is, was the premise for this year’s RadioWorks 2011 Conference. Did we achieve our objectives? We’ll let the delegates speak for themselves…

Johannesburg: 31st August 2011

  • “I think it’s a lot better than last year. I somehow get the sense that it’s more focused. The speakers are very much aware of the stakeholders in the room, whereas previously I found there to be a slant towards one discipline e.g. media, marketing or creative. This year there’s something for everyone and it’s been very entertaining and inspiring, so thank you RAB!” – Xolisa Dyeshana, Joe Public
  • “Congratulations to the RAB! You guys have done fantastically. The speakers are awesome; there are so many insights here. Well done for getting Barrett (Whiteford) to speak, it actually shows how a radio campaign in the modern environment does work and does produce results, so, it’s up to the industry now to put into practice! It’s a stunning event that you’ve organised here and we’re learning a lot, so thank you very much!” – Andrew Smythe, Radioheads
  • “Hearing a Marketing Manager like Barrett from FNB, who believes and has had the courage to use radio in the way that they have, with so many positive results for the bank is revolutionary. I think that’s a huge deposit for the industry”. – Simon Parkinson, Primedia
  • “It’s been very good.  I’ve really learnt a lot, especially the bit about how to write a good retail ad, because I do a lot of retail and I think I learnt a good lesson today, thank you Tony!” – Gordon Timm, Comedia
  • “I’m absolutely loving it! I love radio, I’ve been doing radio for 25 years, so for me today is fantastic. Mark (Gillman) obviously knocked everybody’s socks off, very entertaining, very honest – I’m looking forward to the rest of the day, Jenny Ghoos, United Stations
  • “Mark Gillman has a lot of learning. I think it’s great if brands and clients can come to his workshop, because they need to understand that they need to alter their thinking when it comes to budget and time constraints. I actually hate those ‘Steve’ ads, so when I read the agenda and I knew that the presentation was coming up, I wasn’t really looking forward to it. The thinking behind it, however, the actual work that went into it, as well as the results speak for themselves”. – Tamara Meyer, Dial-a-Bed
  • “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the conference. Tony’s (Hertz) words really resonate with my experience in the industry and just about what’s not working in terms of radio today. He’s a man after my own heart. I would suggest that the industry really takes notice of what he has to say. With regards to FNB, I’m the engineer who worked on the campaign. There was a lot of risk taken by Barrett and to see the results that it’s generated because he really believed in the process is really gratifying. To see a marketer who’s willing to take those risks is amazing, so hats off to him, hats off the agency, it was a lot of fun working on that campaign”. – John Culverwell, Sonovision

Cape Town, 1st September 2011

·         “Lebo’s presentation really stood out for me! Helping us understand what’s happening in the townships is exactly the kind of stuff we need. Very often advertisers and copywriters write scripts, not knowing what they are writing about, or what’s happening out there.  They write scripts because they feel it’s a great idea in their head. For all we know, what they’re churning out could be out-dated and won’t be relevant to the audience. Overall, it was an awesome event”. – David Mashabela, Mashabela Creatives

·         “I thought Mark Gillman had a very interesting story to tell.  He had a different way of telling the story but I think it hit home for us. This was a superb ‘get-together’; it was great to mingle with like-minded industry people. Very impressed with John Walls!” – Natano Brache, GoodHope FM

·          “I think was a very good mixture of presenters. Everyone was engaging. For the first ‘wake-up’, Mark Gillman stood out for me this morning. He was great! I also enjoyed Jenny and Brent’s presentation, their content was outstanding. Storytelling is what radio’s about and it resonates with me, so I thought Khaya Dlanga was great too”. – Tonya Keppel Smith, Primedia

·         “Mark Gillman definitely set the pace for today’s show. I really enjoyed the case study from FNB too.  When I first saw it on the agenda, I definitely thought it was going to be boring. It was absolutely fantastic. It’s great to see changes in radio planning strategy versus the outcome in performance.  A great day overall, fantastic!” – Kelvin Storie, Vizeum

·         “The rest of the media channels should really follow the RadioWorks lead. We’re forever looking for opportunities to learn new things, especially with radio, because it’s viewed as a 2nd cousin to TV, and really shouldn’t be”. – Liezl Mari Long, TBWA Hunt Lascaris CT

·         “I really wish I could tear myself into 3 because I’d really like to go see Mark’s session, Tony’s as well as the Insights Exchange. I think I’ll do what I did as a student; sneak into one movie at the cinema, then another one, and then sneak back into the other one”, – Marius Adams,SABC

·         ‘It’s been absolutely amazing! Mark Gillman’ session was extremely thought-provoking There have been a couple of presenters, Tony, for example, who have been brilliant. I’ve definitely found the day to be very rewarding and would recommend it to everybody”. – Shereen Warner, OMD
